Le 27 juin dernier se sont tenues au même moment à travers l’Indonésie différentes élections locales. Les citoyens indonésiens inscrits sur les listes électorales se sont déplacés aux urnes pour élire en tout 17 gouverneurs, 39 maires et 115 régents sur tout le territoire.

À Bali, c’est le poste de gouverneur qui a été l’objet du vote pour remplacer l’actuel titulaire, Made Mangku Pastika, en poste depuis 10 ans et ayant effectué deux mandats consécutifs. Les deux candidats à l’élection étaient Wayan Koster, membre du Conseil Représentatif Populaire depuis 2014 et Ida Bagus Rai Dharmawijaya Mantra, maire de Denpasar depuis 2008.

Afin de pouvoir présenter un candidat à l’élection du gouverneur un parti doit posséder au moins 20% des sièges au conseil provincial législatif de Bali (DPRD), un seul candidat par parti peut se présenter. Wayan Koster représentait le parti démocratique indonésien pour la lutte (PDI-I) alors que Ida Bagus Rai Dharmawijaya Mantra appartenant à la coalition populaire de Bali (KRB) regroupant différent partis comme Golkar, NasDem, le parti démocrate et Gerindra.

Le gouvernement a déclaré que le 27 juin 2018 serait un jour férié national afin de permettre aux indonésiens de se rendre aux urnes. À Bali, le taux de participation pour l’élection du gouverneur a été de 72%, soit 2.147.380 votants.
Les estimations faites par différents partis donnent gagnant Wayan Coster avec plus d’1 million de voix alors que Mantra n’en a obtenu qu’environ 880 000.
