Pada tanggal 27 Juni 2018, pemilu di beberapa daerah di Indonesia berlangsung secara serentak pada saat yang sama. Warga negara Indonesia pergi ke TPS untuk memilih 17 gubernur, 39 walikota, dan 115 bupati yang tersebar di seluruh negeri.

Di Bali, pemilihan gubernur diadakan untuk pergantian posisi gubernur saat ini, Made Mangku Pastika, yang bertugas selama 10 tahun untuk dua periode berturut-turut. Dua kandidat tersebut adalah Wayan Koster, anggota Dewan Perwakilan Rakyat sejak 2014 dan Ida Bagus Rai Dharmawijaya Mantra, walikota Denpasar sejak 2008.

Untuk mencalonkan diri sebagai partai dalam pemilihan gubernur, anda harus memegang setidaknya 20% kursi di Dewan Legislatif Provinsi Bali (DPRD) dan hanya satu kandidat per partai yang dapat ikut serta dalam pemilu. Wayan Koster mewakili Partai Demokrasi Indonesia Perjuangan (PDI-P) sedangkan Ida Bagus Rai Mantra Dharmawijaya merupakan perwakilan Koalisi Rakyat Bali (KRB) mengumpulkan partai-partai yang berbeda: Golkar, NasDem, Demokrat dan Gerindra.

Pemerintah Indonesia menyatakan 27 Juni 2018 sebagai hari libur nasional untuk memungkinkan masyarakat pergi ke TPS. Di Bali, untuk pemilihan gubernur, 2.147.380 memilih, yang mewakili 72% dari populasi pemilih.

Penghitungan cepat yang dilakukan oleh berbagai pihak menyimpulkan kemenangan hasil pemilihan ke Wayan Koster dengan lebih dari 1 juta suara, sedangkan Mantra mencapai sekitar 880 ribu suara.
