La République d'Indonésie n'est pas seulement le plus grand archipel du monde, c'est aussi un grand ensemble de peuples et de communautés. Il y existe plus de 540 dialectes mais la langue officielle en Indonésie est le Bahasa Indonesia, qui est appris dans les écoles et qui permet et facilite la communication entre les différentes régions et îles de l’archipel. La plupart des balinais pratique également l’anglais étant donné que le tourisme est le secteur le plus prometteur du pays. Il se peut que vous ne puissiez pas communiquer en anglais avec les balinais de certaines régions plus rurales et excentrées.

A Bali, la langue balinaise diffère également selon les zones et selon les castes. 

L'apprentissage du bahasa pour un européen peut présenter quelques difficultés mais la praticité de cette langue est que son alphabet a été romanisé et donc facilite la lecture et l’accès. De plus, contrairement à la plupart des autres langues asiatiques, le Bahasa n’est pas une langue tonale ce qui facilite la compréhension et l’expression lorsque l’on s’initie pour la première fois.
