Ketika berbicara tentang Bali, bayangan tentang pemandangan sawah yang sempurna, air terjun, dan pantai pasir putih sering muncul dalam pikiran, dan memang demikian adanya. Namun selama beberapa dekade terakhir, Bali telah dan masih dalam keadaan krisis lingkungan yang terus berkembang yang mengotori pulau surga: plastik.

Untuk menghambat  konsekuensi yang mengerikan dari polusi, Gubernur Bali Wayan Koster mengumumkan larangan penggunaan plastik sekali pakai pada 24 Desember 2018. Tujuannya adalah untuk mengurangi limbah plastik hingga 70% pada tahun 2020.

"Kebijakan ini ditujukan untuk produsen, distributor, pemasok dan pelaku bisnis, termasuk individu, untuk menekan penggunaan plastik sekali pakai. Mereka harus mengganti plastik dengan bahan lain," kata Mr Koster, seperti dikutip oleh situs berita tribunnews. Koster menambahkan bahwa masa tenggang 6 bulan akan diberikan sampai sanksi administratif akan mulai berlaku. Jika tidak patuh, pengguna plastik tidak akan melihat izin bisnis mereka diperpanjang.

Menelusuri asal-usul sampah plastik ternyata sangat sulit, tetapi para ahli dalam hal ini memperkirakan bahwa 80% sampah plastik yang mendarat di pantai-pantai pulau itu berasal dari Bali sendiri.

Pemerintah Jakarta dikatakan ikut serta dan dalam pembatasan penggunaan plastik.
